Repurposing Timber

Upcycling and reusing reclaimed wood is a creative and ecofriendly way to breathe new life into old materials. And we’re thrilled to see that it’s going through a bit of a boom!

In our ongoing effort to reduce waste and promote resource efficiency, we set up a timberyard in Cold Ashton, open to the public, where we recycle hoarding materials that are no longer needed in our projects.

The repurposed timber from our recycling process has been put to some fantastic use, inspiring creative projects from Wyatt Fencing team members, businesses and individuals alike.

Want to learn about how you can repurpose reclaimed timber yourself and see some cracking project examples? Sick around for the inside scoop!

Why repurpose timber?

Repurposing wood has a number of environmental benefits, from reducing the amount of timber that goes to landfills to reducing the demand for new timber and thus also reducing deforestation.

And believe it or not, there are benefits outside of sustainability too. Recycled wood can actually be stronger and more durable than some of the wood grown in today’s farms, as they were harvested from trees at full maturity. Because older timber has been exposed to hot and cold atmospheres for so long, it’s also already dried out; done all the expanding and contracting it ever will. That means it’s also less likely to warp or split.

Reclaimed Timber is also a very popular choice of timber for interior furniture due to aesthetic, as you can see below.

Where can you get recycled wood?

You can find scrap wood at your local lumber yard or hardware shop, often at a reasonable price (come and visit us at the Wyatt Fencing sales yard!). You can use pieces of wood that you no longer need as well, such as old fence posts or leftovers from a previous project.

How to repurpose timber?

The beauty of repurposing timber is that you can do so much with it. It’s a real opportunity to embrace your creativity and make something special. From cutting boards and coasters to shelving and furniture – the opportunities are endless! `

BUT, if you’re after a bit of inspiration, here are a few examples:

  • This planter was made out of our reclaimed posts and rails and can be seen in the Wyatt Fencing sales yard.

  • One of our customers, Arcadian Furniture, has created some stunning pieces using our reclaimed wood. From tables to chairs, their creations are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly.
